Gender Awareness Workshop for the Divisional Secretariat Office in Galle

On february 6, HNRDF conducted a gender awareness workshop for officials at the Divisional Secretariat Office in Galle. The workshop was part of a multi-day program in which employees could voluntarily participate. Its purpose was to provide a clear and practical understanding of what gender is, what it entails, and why it is relevant in governmental work.

The workshop was part of a broader initiative by HNRDF in collaboration with the organazation Pathways to Peace, funded by Global Affairs Canada, focuses on protecting the rights and improving the lives of LGBTQIA+ individuals in southern Sri Lanka. These individuals often face stigma, discrimination, and legal vulnerabilities. The project addresses sensitive issues such as human rights violations, police harassment, and sexual abuse, highlighting the importance of discussing gender norms and their implications.

We explained what intersex means as a biologial concept and we clarified that being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender is not a matter of choice. Through examples and interactive activities, participants explored gender norms and societal expectations for men and woman. Questions like what does it mean to be a woman? Or how do you see the roles of men and woman? Encouraged open reflection and discussion without judgment. Especially since its a taboo in a lot of places, it is really important to talk about it.

By participating in workshops like this, government officials gain the knowledge and awareness needed to approach their work with greater inclusivity and sensitivity. These efforts are an important step toward creating a more equitable and understanding way of working.
